Profile of Sabin-Corneliu Buraga


My full name is Sabin-Corneliu Buraga and I am a Full Professor at The Faculty of Computer Science, "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Romania.

Education and Research

I achieved the title of Doctor in Information Sciences at "A.I.Cuza" University of Iasi in 2004 – title of thesis: Multimedia Object Manipulation Techniques on Internet". Additionally, in 2022, I obtained the Habilitation title – the highest qualification issued through the process of a university examination – by defending a thesis titled "Achievements in the (Semantic) Web Technologies and Human-Computer Interaction".

Also, in 2005 I received "Gheorghe Cartianu" Award of the Romanian Academy for outstanding scientific contributions published in 2003.

Also, I have background knowledge regarding Distributed Computing – Internet Technologies, Agent-based Computing, Mobility, Cluster, Grid and Cloud Computing, Peer-to-Peer Systems and others.

My papers are published in the proceedings of different international and national conferences or in special issues of international publications – for instance, ACM Press, IEEE Press, Springer, AAAI Press, IOS Press, Elsevier Science, and others.

Since 2003, I serve as a member of the program committees or/and organizing committees of various (inter)national scientific events, including workshops and summer schools.

I wrote and edited several books. I was an editor of the Web series of books published by the Polirom Publishing House. Also, I was a co-founder member and supervisor of a young interest group on Web technologies – WebGroup –, founded in 2000 at the Faculty of Computer Science and terminated in 2014.

Teaching and Student Mentoring Activities

My recent teaching activity consists of Web Technologies, Web Application Development (former Semantic Web), and Human-Computer Interaction disciplines. Also, I delivered lectures within the Computer Science Doctoral School of "A.I.Cuza" University of Iasi and other several events.

I was a mentor of the Sytech student team awarded with 1st prize at Imagine Cup 2009 – Software Design section. Also, I supervised the AVe team – placed in the first 10 teams at Imagine Cup 2012 – Game Design section.

During the years, I was involved in organizing, leading and judging different student and professional competitions and challenges – a few examples: Mozilla Labs Concept Series: Student Outreach, <Web/> series of workshops on Web technologies, InfoEducatie – a national contest for high-school students, FII Competition – a national competition for university students, and others.

Academic Management

I had a rich activity concerning the academic management:

Between 2002 and 2012 and between 2016 and 2020, I was a member of the Faculty of Computer Science Council, UAIC. Between 2012 and 2016, I was a member of the Department of Computer Science Board, Faculty of Computer Science, UAIC.

Additionally, I initiated and/or mentained various relations between academia and IT industry and organizations.

Personal Activities

My hobbies are multiple. I only mention the artistic ones: literature, modern painters, and music.
