Biography
Born on December 16, 1951, in the town of Moinești, Bacău County.
Attended primary and middle school in his hometown. The first two years of high school were at “Spiru Haret” Theoretical High School in Moinești, and the last two years at “I.L. Caragiale” High School in Ploiești.
Graduated in 1975 from the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, Computer Science Department, at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, and in 1981 from the Faculty of Mathematics at “A.I. Cuza” University of Iași.
Doctoral studies first at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC), under the supervision of Professor Călin Ignat, and later at the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest (currently the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA), under the guidance of Professor Mircea Petrescu. Earned the title of PhD in Computer Science in 1994, with a thesis titled “Problems in Natural Language Analysis. Applications to Database Access.”
Between 1976 and 1989 – systems engineer at the Computing Center of UAIC. Between 1989–1995 – lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science Department of UAIC (since 1992 – Faculty of Computer Science: UAIC-FII), between 1995–2002 – associate professor, and between 2002–2020 – full professor. Granted the title of emeritus professor of UAIC in 2021.
Dean of UAIC-FII between 2000 and 2003. In 2002, he founded the Master’s Program in Computational Linguistics.
Since 2002, scientific researcher (half-time) at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, Iași Branch of the Romanian Academy (ARFI-IIT).
Among the courses taught at undergraduate level: Programming (Lisp, Prolog, Clips), Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems/Rule-Based Programming, Natural Language Processing; and at the master’s level: Introduction to Computational Linguistics.
PhD advisor at the UAIC-FII Doctoral School since 2002, supervising topics in various areas of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence.
Teaching and research visits at universities and research institutes in: Edinburgh, Paris-Sud Orsay, Strasbourg, Lille, Marseille, Venice, Pisa, Vercelli, Hamburg, Penang, Hyderabad, Singapore, Toronto, Neuchâtel, Nijmegen, Trento, Valletta, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Chișinău, Bucharest, etc.
Founder, in 1993, of the biennial international summer school series EUROLAN, focused on natural language processing (since 1995 in collaboration with Dan Tufiș, and since 1997 also with Nancy Ide).
Founder, in 2006, of the annual conference series of the Romanian Language Informatization Consortium ConsILR.
Research areas: artificial intelligence, natural language processing, discourse theory, anaphora resolution, creation of linguistic resources for Romanian, computational lexicography.
Participated as member, task leader, or coordinator in 29 projects with national or international funding.
Among scientific results: the Theory of Nervures, the contemporary Romanian language corpus CoRoLa (in collaboration), technologies for developing the digital format of the Dictionary of the Romanian Language, and technologies for transcribing old Romanian Cyrillic writings into Latin script (in collaboration).
Since 2002 - correspondent member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania.
Since 2015 - corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.
Since 2015 - full member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania.
